The History of the Audlem Lass Boat Service
Nestled in the heart of Cheshire's idyllic countryside, the Audlem Lass Boat Service is much more than a charming canal boat journey — it is a story of community spirit, local heritage, and a vision brought to life by a passionate individual: Rodney Cottrell, with the help of Overwater Marina owners Janet and Angus Maughan.
A Vision Born from Passion
The idea for the Audlem Lass Boat Service was conceived in 2010 by Rodney Cottrell, a local resident and dedicated sailor, with a lifelong love for being on the water. Recognising both the beauty and the historical significance of the Shropshire Union Canal, Rodney saw an opportunity to create a boat service connecting the village of Audlem with Overwater Marina, that would both serve the community and raise funds for the RNLI.
Rodney's vision was to offer visitors and locals a peaceful, scenic ride along the canal, connecting Overwater Marina with the picturesque village of Audlem. But more than that, he saw the potential to bring people together — to encourage tourism, support local businesses, and provide volunteers with a meaningful and enjoyable way to contribute to their community.
Supporting a Cause Close to His Heart
For Rodney, the Audlem Lass was not just about heritage and hospitality — it was also a way to support a cause he deeply believed in: the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). A passionate advocate for the lifesaving work of the RNLI, Rodney made it a central mission of the boat service to raise awareness and funds for the organisation.
Thanks to Rodney's efforts and the generosity of passengers, the Audlem Lass Boat Service has raised many thousands of pounds for the RNLI over the years. His tireless fundraising, often accompanied by cheerful conversations and canal-side events, earned him admiration and respect throughout the local and wider boating community.
The Role of Overwater Marina and Janet & Angus Maughan
Key to turning this vision into a reality were Janet and Angus Maughan, co-owners of Overwater Marina. They had been instrumental in developing the marina as a hub for canal users, and immediately recognised the potential of Rodney's idea. With their support Rodney was able to shape the Audlem Lass Boat Service into a practical and sustainable venture.
Together, Rodney and the Maughan Family laid the foundations for what would become one of the region's most beloved mini visitor experiences. With the marina providing a perfect starting point, and the village of Audlem welcoming visitors with its historic charm, the route is ideal for a short but memorable canal journey.
A Volunteer-Run Success Story
From the outset, the Audlem Lass has been run entirely by volunteers — a testament to the power of community involvement. Local residents have stepped forward to operate the boat, assist with maintenance, and greet passengers. Their enthusiasm and commitment has transformed a simple boat ride into a heartfelt experience that continues to delight thousands each season.
Since its launch, the Audlem Lass Boat Service has carried tens of thousands of passengers, offering a unique and tranquil way to explore the countryside and canal heritage. It has also supported numerous local causes and played a key role in promoting Audlem as a destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers.
Preserving Heritage, Supporting Lifesavers
More than just a boat ride, the Audlem Lass is a symbol of what can be achieved when community members share a common goal. Rodney Cottrell's dream, supported by Janet and Angus Maughan and the team at Overwater Marina, has become an enduring part of Audlem's identity.
As the boat gently glides along the canal today, it carries with it not just passengers, but a legacy — one of dedication, collaboration, and a deep love for both the waterways and the lifesavers of the RNLI.
